Sculptures Workshop
An Immersion in Observation
1 – 4 May 2015
at Theodora Chorafas’s studio
Oikia Karapanou, Perivola
Aegina
In this four day workshop, we will analyse the dynamics of the body, using sketches, self-portraiture and sculpting in clay.
The workshop is open to all, beginners and the more experienced alike. We are all artists!
Working with a live model
We’ll study how to look at the human form through the eyes of a sculptor. Starting with small, quick sketches, we’ll build up to sculpting in clay, directly from the model. We’ll look at how to measure, photograph and choose a pose to work from.
Observe the body from different angles, how it moves, how it’s affected by gravity.
Experiencing our bodies
Using music and movement, explore how the body changes as we turn, as we bend: study the movement of the skeleton, muscles and fat. Each day we’ll cover some basic anatomy points and work on essential observation techniques.
Studio work
Free time in the studio will allow an opportunity to work on small, individual pieces and the chance to collaborate on a large-scale group sculpture We’ll learn hand building techniques and explore how to build with coils.
We’ll have some light, fun homework each day, which could be anything from a self-portrait to observations and sketches of others.
On the last afternoon, participants are invited to visit my home studio to see current projects and how I work.
